Munnar

Munnar is a hill station in the Indianstate of Kerala.

Understand

Munnar is a typical hill station, and was the summer resort of theBritish. Tourists come here to see the vast tea plantations of the area. Thetown itself is typically Indian with the usual shops, guest houses and isreally beautiful and traditional. It is a good place to stay to see the surroundingcountryside. It is also a popular place for Indian honeymooners.

The town is divided into two parts, Old Munnar, where the touristinformation office is, and Munnar, where the bus station and most guest housesare located.

Munnar is 1,600 m (5,400 ft) above sea level. It is pronounced"Moon-aar" short for "moonu aar" meaning 3 rivers. Threerivers - Madupetti, Nallathanni and Periavaru which flow through this town, butjoin some distance away from Munnar.

Munnar is famous for its tea plantations, many of them started bythe British. The "Kannan Devan" brand of Tea from the Tata iscultivated and processed here.

The strobilanthus ("neelakurinji" in Malayalam, thelocal language), a blue flower which blooms only every 12 years, is found inthis region. It bloomed last in December 2006. Munnar also has the highest peakin South India, Anamudi, at 2,695 m.

Eravikulam national park is one of the main tourist attraction,where you can find the endagered species of Nilgiri Tahr (mountain goat called"varayadu" in Malayalam). A treck to Rajamala ("King ofhills" in Malayalam), in the morning is sure to spot a few friendlymountain goats. You can also fond Gaur, Langur, Lion-tailed macaque, andElephants depending on the season and time of travel. The altitude is 1,600-1.800m above sea level. Temperature ranges from a minimum of 0⁰C to a maximum of 28⁰C. Warm clothes and rain gear is recommended.The tourist season is from Aug-Mar.

By Air

Cochin International airport (IATA: COK, ICAO: VOCI), also known as Nedumbassery Airport and CIAL is thenearest airport. It is around 135 km from the Munnar by car.

By Train

The nearest railway station is Aluva, 120 km. Ernakulam is 140 km and may be more comfortable if you arecoming from the south. You can get the direct buses to Munnar, just outside ofRailway station. First Bus starts at 6 am.

By car

§ From Kochi: Munnar is 140 km (about 3 hr) from Kochi. Allow 6 hr travelingtime if you are driving up or down, since the road is blind in some places andthere are a lot of trucks and buses that seem to drive as if they own the road.Although the road is smooth (NH 49), it is narrow, twisty and curvy. Kothamangalamison the way and is 80 km away from Munnar. Between Kothamangalam and next town"Adimali", you can experience a beautiful cool drive through anatural forest. Alongside, you can see many refreshing waterfalls. Once youreach Adimali, Munnar is just 30 kilometers away - but it will take almost anhour to reach. This is the last place where you can spot a decent restaurantbefore Munnar. Around 22 km from Adimali, you can start seeing the teaplantations on both sides of the road and a panoramic view of the westernghats. The view is extremely beautiful during the early mornings.

§ From Aluva: Aluva is nearly 120 km from Munnar. Just outside Aluvarailway station you can hire a taxi for Munnar for Rs 1,400-1,600. There is abus stand nearby as well which operates frequent buses to Munnar.

§ From Coimbatore: Munnar is about 160 km from Coimbatore and 120km from Pollachi. Coimbatore-Pollachi - Udumalpet - Chinnar - Marayoor - Munnar route is the most scenic route and though itwill take bit longer, it is generally considered worth the extra time spent.

§ From Kodaikanal: Kodaikanal is nearly 170 km from Munnar. Kodaikanal -Perumal Malai - Mayiladum Parai - Mooliyaru - Oothu - Falls View -Ganguvarpetty - Ghat Road - Periya Kulam - Theni - Bodi - Bodimettu - Devikulam - Munnar. Thisroute is also scenic.

By bus

Munnar bus station is located on the main street, Main Bazaar.

§ Kochi - takes about 4 1/2 hr. Buses leave Kochibetween 6AM-1PM.

§ Aluva - Nearest bus station to the Cochin International Airport. Around 4 hr to Munnar.Ticket cost is around Rs 100-180 depending on the type of bus.

There are also buses from Coimbatore and Pollachi.

You can rent a manual or automatic motorbike on a daily basis forRs 350/day.

§ Atukkad Waterfalls, A scenic waterfalls amidst hills and jungles.You can find a road leading to Atukkad Waterfalls on Kochi road (just about 5km from Munnar). This road is very narrow and needs a lot of experience todrive on.

§ Chithirapuram is located at a distance of around 10 km from Munnar.Chithirapuram has old playgrounds and courts, bungalows and sleepy littlecottages which all give this place an old world charm. This town is also famousfor its tea plantations in the world.

§ Blossam Park, (1 km from Munnar).

§ Photo Point, (2 km from Munnar). It is a small place filled with woodsand a small stream. Good location to take photos.

§ Mattupetti Dam, (10 km from Munnar), this popular picnic spot activitieslike boating and horse riding and is a great place to spend the day e speciallyif visiting with children. You could take the speed boat ride which isfantastic. It costs Rs 300 if you have to hire a boat for you alone. The rideis for 15 min. The maximum capacity is 5 persons and you could save some moneyif you are a group of 4-5.

§ Mattupetti Indo-Swiss Farm, Better known as Mattupetti (cattle village),Tamil migrant labourers had once upon a time reared cattle here. The coolclimate and abundance of fodder made it the ideal location for the Indo-Swissdairy farm. Established in 1961, the Kerala Livestock Development Board (KLDB)manages this highly specialised dairy farm. The dairy farm is a unique one ofits kind with more than 100 varieties of high-yielding cattle being reared.Tourists are not allowed to enter the farm.

Echo Point

§ Echo Point, (15 km from Munnar), on the way to top station fromMunnar is a small lake set amidst rolling hills. Every loud call made from aspot on the lake embankment is returned manifold by the echo from thesurrounding hills. Young tourists throng to this place to listen to the echoesof their friendship calls.

§ Elephant Arrival Spot, (18 km from Munnar), Here you can boardan elephant for a ride. It costs approximately Rs 350 per person.

§ Kundala Lake, (23 km from Munnar). This lake is very beautiful amidstlush jungles. Hiring a pedal boat and exploring the lake and its surroundingsis an awesome experience. Except at the place you hired the boat, don't expectto find humans around the lake as it is surrounded by scenic jungles and hills.Unless you know how to row a boat, prefer a pedal boat, each trip lasts around30 min and will be closed at 4:30PM

§ Top Station, [1]. (37 km fromMunnar on the Kerala and Tamil Nadu border). Great views of the WesternGhats. Top station is the "top"-tourist attraction. This place givesa real 'above the clouds' experience. Regular buses go to Top Station (1 hr)from Munnar. A jeep costs Rs 400. The area is known for the Neelakurunji plant,which flowers only once every 12 years. The flower is violet.

Towards Marayoor

§ Tata Tea Museum', (Around 2 km on the Nallathany road, fromMunnar). Tourists can see pieces of colonial era and old bits collection.Videography and photography is strictly prohibited here. This museum remainsopen from 10AM-4PM every day, closed on Mon. There is a Rs 50 ticket fee foradults and Rs 25 ticket for children.

§ Naimakkadu Water Falls

§ Eravikulam (Rajamalai) National Park, [2] (45 min from Munnar).See Nilgiri Thar (Hemitragas hylocres) - an endangered species of mountaingoats, rolling grasslands and sholas, spread over 97² km in the Rajamalaihills, rare flora and fauna, Atlas moth (largest in the world), lion-tailedmacaque, leopards, tigers, The Kurichi or Neelakurinji Flowers turn the hillsof Rajamalai blue every 12 years. The next bloom will be in 2018. One canactually debate if going to the high peak just to see some goats is worth allthe effort or not. However, the walk along the park is very romantic and hassome breath taking view.

§ Anamudi Peak inside Eravikulam National Park, The highest peak (2,695 m) south of theHimalayas, towers over the sanctuary in majestic pride. The slopes of the hillsabound in all kinds of rare flora and fauna. The Atlas moth, the largest of itskind in the world, is a unique inhabitant of the park. Other rare species offauna found here are the Nilgiri Langur, the lion-tailed macaque, leopards,tigers. An ideal place for trekking, facilities are provided here and touristsare allowed to go on foot up to Anamudi.

§ Lakkam Water Falls. (24 km from Munnar). A small waterfall.

§ Marayoor - (Around 40 km from Munnar). It is the only place inKerala with natural growth of sandalwood trees, natural caves with murals, andrelics from late Stone Age civilisation. There is a sandalwood factory of theForestry department of Kerala and a children's park extending across one hectareof land under the canopy of a single Banyan tree, all of which attract touristsin large numbers.

§ Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, [3].Chinnar wildlifesanctuary is located in the Wester Ghats of Kerala. Thiswildlife sanctuary has a large number of plants and animals. This wildlifesanctuary is spread in around 90² km of area. This sanctuary is one of theprotected areas in the western ghats because of the significance of its flora,geomorphologic features, ecology and local cultural.

§ Salim Ali (Thattekkad) Bird Sanctuary, [4]. There are woodpeckers, Malabar grayhornbills, Ceylon frogmouths, parakeets, and rose-billed rollers. Thissanctuary is located 20 km from Kothamangalam on the road between Ernakulam andMunnar. There are basic and mid-range hotels in Kothamangalam and an InspectionBungalow in Boothathankettu. You can take a boat cruise from Boothathankettu toThattekkad. Admission foreigners: Rs 40, Indian Rs 10.

§ Kolukkumalai Tea Estate, At a height of about 2,175 m (7,130 ft), thisorthodox tea factory lays claim to being one of the highest in the world. Theview of the Western Ghats is absolutely enchanting.

§ The Christ Church, in Old Munnar. The exteriors have worn outwith time though the charming interiors still have a very nice ambiance. It wasconsecrated way back in 1910 and still has 14 original rows of pews. The firstCatholic Church in the High Ranges was Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church.

§ The High Range Club, has a charming colonial style. The club houseis built of wicker and teak and is the social hub for the tea"Planters" of the region. Members enjoy lounging in the bar overPlanter's Punch followed by a good meal, a game of billiards or reading a bookin the library.

§ Munnar Supply Association (MSA), Set up in 1900, this is another nostalgiclandmark worth visiting in Munnar. It is the oldest department store in thearea and has been re-inventing itself to stay relevant and popular after almost102 years. The store was run by "planters" who still manage itsaffairs. The MSA is a red brick, red tiled building with gables, buttresses anda porch and is now a heritage site.

History of Idukki Dam

In the heart of the District lies the 'IDUKKI DAM' - Asia's biggest Arch Dam of 555 feet height proudly standing between the two mountains - 'Kuravanmala' (839 meters) and 'Kurathimala' (925 meters ). This prestigeous project of our nation is situated in Idukki District and its underground Power House is located at Moolamattom which is about 19 kms from Thodupuzha. Idukki Dam is 43 kms away from Moolamattom.

History

The possibility of Hydroelecric development at Idukki was first conceived in 1919. As per history Shri Kolumban, the head of 'Araya' race during 1922 showed the way, to the Malankara Estate Superintendent and his friend Thomas, who were on hunting spree in the forest, the spot of present Arch Dam. He told them of the legend of Kuravan and Kurathi Hills. The mind of Thomas was stirred by the sight of water flow between the mountains and his idea made the dream true of Idukki Arch Dam. Sri. W.J.John of Malankara Estate submitted a report to the Government of Travancore in 1932 on the possiability of constructing a dam at Idukki for Power Generation.

In 1947 Sri.P.Joseph John,then Chief Electrical Engineer to the Government of Travancore made a preliminary investigation report. On the request made by the Government, the Central Water and Power Commission took up detailed investigation in 1956. The project report was prepared in 1961 and the Planning Commission accorded sanction for implementing the scheme in 1963 and the preliminary works of the project were started. The project was posed for Canadian aid and its scope was enlarged and a revised project report was drawn up in 1956-66.

The construction of this Dam commenced on 30 April 1969. Storage of water in idukki reservoir commenced in February,1973. The inauguration of trial run of the first machine was celebrated on 4th October,1975. Commercial operation of the Power Station was Commissioned on 12 February 1976 by the then Hon. Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi.

Construction of this Arch Dam and two other dams at Cheruthony and Kulamavu has created an artificial lake of 60 sq. kms. width and the water stored, is utilised for production of electricity at the unique Moolamattom Power house, which is located inside the rocky caves.

Foreign Aid

The Government of Canada aided the Project with long term loans and grants. M/s S.N.C.Inc., Canada, a well-known firm of Consulting Engineers were advising and assisting Project Engineers under the Canadian Aid.

Project in Brief

The Project harnesses a major portion of the power potential of Periyar, the largest river in Kerala State, by the creation of a reservoir of 2,000 M.cum (2 Billion Tonnes) capacity, diversion of waters thus impounded through a water conductor system consisting of a power tunnel and two underground pressure shafts to an underground power house situated in Muvattupuzha Valley. The installed capacity of the Power House is 780MW consisting of 6 Units of 180 MW each.The regulated waters of Periyar falls through a drop of about 669.2 metres (2195 feet) while generating power in the underground power house.

The tail waters flowing to Kudayathurpuzha through tunnel and open channel will later be diverted for irrigation purposes in the Muvattupuzha Valley.

History of Idukki

IDUKKI District was formed on 26 January 1972 as per Government notification No 54131/C2/71/RD dated 24th January 1972. The district consists of Devikulam, Udumbanchola and Peermedu taluks of the erstwhile Kottayam district and Thodupuzha taluk (excluding two villages Manjallore and Kalloorkadu) of the erstwhile Ernakulam district. At the time of formation the district headquarters started functioning at Kottayam and from there it was shifted to Painavu in Thodupuzha taluk in June 1976, where it is proposed to build a new planned forest township.
The district's name, 'Idukki' is supposed to be derived from the Malayalam word 'Idukku' which means a narrow gorge. Periyar which is one of the largest rivers of Kerala, flowing through Idukki gorge formed between the two high massive rocks called "Kuravan" and "Kurathi", is the site of the gigantic Idukki arch dam. We have very little authentic knowledge which throws light into the ancient history of Idukki district. Eventhough there is no clear evidence whether men of the paleolithic age lived here, there is evidence of stone-age civilisation. Stone-age dolmens were discovered in the valleys of Anchanad in Devikulam taluk. Archaeological excavation conducted during 1947-48 at Kallar Pattom colony in Udumbanchola taluk and at Vandiperiyar in Peermedu taluk brought to light the remains of Old Stone-age Menhir and Tombs.
Karikode near Thodupuzha was the head quarters of Vadakkumkoor Raja. There is remains of a fort at Karikkode. Near this fort there is a Devi temple said to have constructed by the Vadakkumkoor Raja. There is also another temple by name Annamala Temple constructed in Chola style. The church at Muthalakodam, near Thodupuzha is believed to have constructed before 13th Century. The Ninnar Mosque near Karikkode is said to have constructed by the Vadakkumkoor Raja for his Muslim soldiers. Thodupuzha was also a nerve business centre. There is historical evidence to prove that from ancient time onwards ivory, teak, rosewood, sandalwood, peacock etc., were exported to foreign countries.
Historians believe that Kuzhumoor, the capital of Chera Kings of the Sangam Age, is the Kumily in Peermade taluk. It is assumed that portions of Meenachil taluk and the whole of High Range were included in the Thanthuzhynad under the Kulasekhara Empire (A.D.800-1102). For some time these regions were under the region of the Thekkumkoor Kingdom. It was proved that Vennimala, one of the capitals of the Thekkumkoor Rajas, was in Idukki district. Poonjar Kingdom was established by Manavikrama Kulasekhara Perumal. Manavikraman brought Meenachil taluk and the High Range under his rule from the Thekkumkoor Raja. Thus major portions of Idukki district came under the rule of the Poonjar Raja.

Lying in Devikulam Taluk of Idukki district, chinnar was declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 1984. It is located in the rain shadow region of Western Ghats. It is the second habitat for the endangered Giant Grizzled Squirell in India. With an area of 90.422 sq kms, Chinnar has the unique thorny scrub forest with Xerophytic species.The undulated terrain with rocky patches increase the scenic splendour of the sanctuary. As the altitute varies from 500 to 2400 metres within a few kilo metre radius, there is a drastic variation in the climate and vegetation. The highest peaks are Kottakombumalai (2144 metre), Vellaikal malai(1863m), Viriyoottu malai(1845 metre). Unlike in most forests of Kerala, Chinnar gets only about 48 rainy days in a year-during October - November (North - East Monsoons). Elephant, Gaur, Panther, Spotted deer, Sambar, Giant Grizzled Squirrel, Hanuman monkey, Rabbit etc. inhabit the chinna forests. The Giant Grizzled Squirrel is an endangered species. It is dull gray in colour.
WILDLIFE TOURISM
The Chinnar sanctuary is accessible by good roads from the Airports of Coimbatore and Kochi. The nearest railway stations are Aluva(200 km) and Pollachi(60km)As you travel along the road from Karimutti to Chinnar, you can spot elephant, spotted deer, sambar, hanuman monkey and even peacocks on either side of the road . This is a unique experience because generally one has to go deep into the jungle to see wildlife as in the case of most other sanctuaries. Periyar Tiger Reserve
Getting to Thekkady is as sublime as the destination itself. A Scenic journey past mistcapped Mountains, spice plantations and open grasslands lined with spectacular waterfalls and delightful trakking trails forms the access to your hideaway here. Perched amidst dense greenery in the outskirts of the Periyar Tiger Reserve; Throwing up pleasant surprises like wild boars scuttling across the road in front, as you near the sanctuary. Which, sprawling across 777sq.kms, is one of the largest in India. With its matchless scenic beauty and the facilities offered by the Periyar lake formed by the damming of the Periyar river attracts a lot of tourists every year. All about Neelakurinji

Neelakurinji (Strobilanthes Kunthiana) is a bush with several branches. The species name Kunthiana has been derived from the River Kunthi which flows through the rich expanse of the renowned Silent Valley National Park in Kerala. It means that the plant has been first described from the vicinity of this river. The plant grows profusely Shola grasslands and mountain slopes of the mighty Western Ghats and Nilgiris in India. Neelakurinji blooms in a clustered manner on typical inflorescence stocks once in every 12 years. The flowering season ranges between August and November with a peak period of late September and October although some varieties exhibit little variation in their phrenology. The flower has purplish blue colour when aged. It looks light blue in the earlier stage of blooming.

The Nilgiris owe the Neelakurinji for it's name which means blue mountains as it used to clothe a vast area of hills. Neela means blue in Malayalam language and Kurinji is the local name of the flower. There are about 300 species of plants that bloom in 10 to 16 years and Neelakurinji is the best known among them. About 46 of them are found in India . Plants that bloom at long intervals like this is called plietesials. These are mostly found on the hills of high altitude. The main habitat of Neelakurinji is hills surrounding Munnar which is in the Western Ghats. It has become a symbol of bio-diversity of the Western Ghats. This endemic species is also an indicator of the health of the ecosystem. It may well be claimed as flagship species of the mountains

Neelakurinji in Munnar

Munnar is blessed with a rich variety of flora and fauna. Situated about 1600 mts above sea level, Munnar is well known for its vast expanse of Neelakurinji. It last bloomed in the year 1994 and attracted large crowd to Munnar. After an interval of 12 years now the hills around Munnar are blanketed with Kurinji flowers.

Neelakurinji - where else?

Neelakurinji is also seen in the Selvarayan (anglicized as Shevaroys) range of hills in the Eastern Ghats which is noncontinuous range of mountains running from West Bengal in the north, through Orissa and Andhra Pradesh to Tamilnadu in the south. Selvarayan is a local deity and the name means the beautiful one. It is at an altitude of 1,500 metres (4,920 feet) from mean sea level.

Idukki Arch Dam:

This is the world's second and Asia's first arch dam, constructed across the Kuravan and Kurathi hills. 550 ft. high and 650 ft. wide, the dam lies close to the Cheruthoni barrage. To its west is the Kulamavu Dam. Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is located closeby.

he Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary (Entry: 0600 to 1800 hrs):

Lying close to the plantations, in the rich jungles of Periyar in Thekkady is one of the world's most fascinating natural wildlife reserves - the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. Spread across 777 sq. km, of which 360 sq. km is thick evergreen forest, the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1978. Noted for its geomorphology, diversity of wildlife and scenic beauty, the Reserve attracts visitors from all over the world.

The splendid artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar River adds to the charm of the park. This is the only sanctuary in India where you can have the unique experience of viewing wildlife at close quarters from the safety of a boat on the lake. The greatest attraction of Periyar, however, is the herds of wild elephants that come down to play in the lake.

Flora: Over 1965 flowering plants including 171 grass species, 143 species of orchids, the only South Indian conifer Podocarpus Wallichianus.

Mammals: Thirty five species including the wild elephant, gaur, sambar deer and wild boar which can be sighted from the boats the Nilgiri Tahr in the higher rocky areas the endangered lion-tailed macaque confined to the evergreen interiors the bonnet macaque, Malabar giant squirrel, flying squirrel, tiger, jungle cat, sloth bear etc.

265 species including migrants. The hornbill, stork, woodpecker, kingfisher, raptor, cormorant, grackle, darter etc.

Reptiles
Cobra, viper, krait, a number of non-poisonous snakes, and the monitor lizard.

Amphibians
Frogs, toads and limbless caecilians include the colourful Malabar gliding frog, common Indian toad, fungoid frog and bicoloured frog.

Pisces (fish)
The Periyar lake and streams have several species of fish including the masheer, the famous and endangered game fish of India. The otter, the only mammal of the lake, can be frequently spotted from the boat.

Tea, cardamom, pepper and coffee plantations surround the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary.

Grass covered hills, velvet lawns and the cool mountain air make Vagamon a perfect holiday retreat. Chithirapuram (10 km from Munnar):

With its sleepy little cottages, bungalows, old playgrounds and courts, Chithirapuram still exudes an old world charm. Home of the Pallyvasal Hydel Power Project, this hill town is also famous for its picturesque tea plantations.

Mattupetty (13 km from Munnar):

Situated at a height of 1700 m, Mattupetty is known for its highly specialised dairy farm - the Indo Swiss Livestock Project. Over a 100 varieties of high yielding cattle are reared here. Visitors are allowed into 3 of the 11 cattle sheds at the farm. Visiting time: 0900 - 1100 hrs and 1400 - 1530 hrs. Rate Rs. 5 per head.

The Mattupetty lake and dam, just a short distance from the farm, is a very beautiful picnic spot. The sprawling Kundala tea plantations and the Kundala Lake are other attractions in the vicinity. DTPC Idukki provides boating facilities on the Mattupetty Dam. Speed launch, slow speedboat and motorboats are available on hire.

Lock Heart Gap (13 km from Munnar):

This is an ideal place for adventure tourism and trekking. The fresh mountain air, the mist-clad hills and panoramic view make it worthy of a visit.

Rajamala (15 km from Munnar):

This is the natural habitat of the Nilgiri Tahr. Half the world population of the rare mountain goat (Hemitragas hylocres), which is fast becoming extinct, is now found here. The Nilgiri Tahrs are today reduced to small herds found in the Eravikulam Rajamala region. The total number of Nilgiri Tahrs in Rajamala is estimated at 1317.

Echo Point (15 km from Munnar):

This scenic place gets its name from the natural echo phenomenon here. Echo Point is on the way to Top Station from Munnar.

Eravikulam National Park (15 km from Munnar):

The 97 sq. km. park is situated in the Devikulam taluk and is home to the Nilgiri Tahr. The Anamudi peak (2695 m) is located in the southern region of the park.

Sanctuary visit: The park is divided into three regions - the core area, the buffer area and the tourism area. Visitors are allowed only to the tourism area which is in the Rajamala region. The Nilgiri Tahr can be observed at close quarters here.
Visiting time: 0800 - 1700 hrs. Visitors are not allowed during the monsoon.

Power House Waterfalls (18 km from Munnar):

This waterfall on the way to Thekkady from Munnar cascades down a steep rock 2000 m above sea level. The spot is enriched with the scenic western mountain ranges, and is an ideal place for a break on the way to the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in Thekkady.

Kundala (20 km from Munnar):

Kundala is a picturesque town on the way to Top Station. The Golf Course, which belongs to Tata Tea Ltd., is located here. The Kundala artificial dam is another attraction. Aruvikkad Waterfall is also near Kundala.

Anayirankal (22 km from Munnar):

It's a lush green carpet of tea plants. A trip on the splendid reservoir is an unforgettable experience. The Anayirankal Dam is surrounded by the Tata Tea Plantation and evergreen forests. It is an ideal picnic spot.

Top Station (32 km from Munnar):

1700 m above sea level; this is the highest point on the Munnar- Kodaikanal road. The rare Neelakurunji (Strobilanthus) belongs to this region. This plant blooms once every twelve years bathing the hillsides in bright blue. Top Station also offers a panoramic view of the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu.

Cheeyappara:

The Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls are located between Neriamangalam and Adimali on the Kochi - Madurai highway. The Cheeyappara waterfalls cascade down in seven steps. It is a real feast for the eyes. This is also a great place for trekking.

Meenuli: It is noted for two acres of evergreen forests upon a huge rock. The rock is more than 500 acres in area and an ideal spot for mountaineering.

Malankara Reservoir (6 km from Thodupuzha):

Located on the Thodupuzha - Moolamattam road, this artificial lake is accessible by road. The reservoir is ideal for boating and fishing.

Thommankuthu (17 km from Thodupuzha):

The seven step waterfall here is a much loved picnic spot. At each step there is a cascade and a pool beneath. Thommankuthu is an ideal place for adventure tourism. Other attractions: Pedal boating, forest trekking, camping, bathing in the waterfall.

Keezharkuth (25 km from Thodupuzha):

The Rainbow waterfalls which cascade down a rock from a height of about 1500 mt is a wonderful attraction of this spot. It can be seen throughout the year in full swing. The forest around this spot is home to various medicinal plants. It is an ideal place for rock climbing, mountaineering and camp trekking.

Palkulamedu (12 km from Idukki):

Kochi, Alappuzha and other nearby towns can be seen from this peak which is located 3125 m above sea level.

Ramakalmedu (16 km from Nedumkandam, Thekkady-Munnar road):

Rolling green hills and the fresh mountain air make Ramakalmedu an enchanting retreat. The hilltop also offers a panoramic view of the picturesque villages of Bodi and Cumbum on the eastern slope of the Western Ghats. Distance 45 km from Idukki, 40 km from Thekkady and 75 km from Munnar. Bus timings: 0930 hrs Munnar, 1030 hrs Kottayam, 0930 hrs Ernakulam.

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary (60 km from Munnar):

Situated on the Tamil Nadu border, the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is spread across 90.44 sq. km.

Animals: Most of the South Indian wild animals can be found in this forest. These include the grizzled giant squirrel, champal squirrel, elephant, sambar deer, gaur etc.
Birds: Jungle fowl, myna, laughing thrush, black bulbul, peafowl etc.

Charmingly colonial in style, this clubhouse built of wicker and teak still serves as a social centre for the far-flung farmers of the region around Munnar. Idukki is one among the 14 districts of Kerala state, India. The district headquarters is located at Painavu. Other largest towns in Idukki are Thodupuzha, Kattappana and Adimaly.

Idukki is greatly known for the splendid green mountains, streams and spices. It is also a main tourist destination in Kerala with its hill stations and valleys. The famous resort Thekkady (Periyar Tiger Reserve), is in Idukki District. Munnar is another hill resort of the district. Mattupetty is about 11 km away from Munnar. Mattupetty, is the headquarters of the Indo-Swiss Cattle Project.

Idukki also has the largest arch dam in India, the Idukki Dam, constructed for the Idukki Hydro Electric Power Project in 1969 with the cooperation of the Canadian Government. This single project powers almost half of the entire state and some parts of neighbouring states.

Idukki had a population of 1,129,221 as of 2001. It is the second-most backward district in Kerala. It is 5.10% urbanised. [1]

IDUKKI- The Upland of Sanctuaries and Spices

Nestled up in the mountains, Idukki extends an invitation to identify oneself with Nature. Here, where the mist plays hide and seek with the green mountains, the melody is set to the whistle of the crickets and the chirp of wild birds. Dark and deep forests with springs trickling down rocky crevices, falling steep into unfathomed chasms and rivulets flowing past rare flora and fauna, is indeed an idyllic setting to set oneself free of all fetters, understand, feel and perhaps realise, the beauty, power and glory of life.

Other than places like Valara, Thommankuthu, Palkulamedu and Munnar which are of indescribable natural beauty, there are five wild life sanctuaries in Idukki district which need special mention.
Chinnar Wild Life Sanctuary

Chinnar is a wild life sanctuary with an area of 90 sq.Km. The terrain here is undulating and rocky through out at an elevation ranging from 500 to 2400 metres above sea level. The thorny scrub jungle is the unique phenomenon of this sanctuary. The flora in this region consists of thorny scrub jungle, dry deciduous forests, sholas and grass lands.

A wide range of wild life is housed in its sanctuary. Elephant, gaur, sambar, spotted deer, barking deer, lion tailed macaque, Nilgiri Tahr, tiger, panther, wild dog etc. inhabit in this sanctuary. The aviary includes jungle fowl, spotted dove, pea fowl, jungle crow, Kerala laughing thrush, red vented bulbul, Indian hornbill, small green bee eater, blue throated barbet and a host of other small birds.

This sanctuary is situated on either side of the Marayoor - Udumalpet road and is hence accessible by road.
Eravikulam Wild Life Sanctuary

Eravikulam is another wild life sanctuary proclaimed as a National Park since it supports the largest population of Nilgiri Tahr existing in the world now. Anamudi peak (2695 Metres), the highest point south of the Himalayas falls in the southern part of this park. The park is 135 k.m. from Kochi and is accessible by road.

Most of the park is either grassland or part of the shola ecosystem and the average altitude is 2000 metres above m.s.l. The temperature varies from (-)3 degrees Celsius in winter to 29 degrees Celsius in summer. Severe frost occurs between the months of December and January and the average rain fall is 4800 m.m. During the monsoon, lashing rains, high velocity winds and poor visibility makes the area practically inaccessible.

A wide variety of plant life is present here. The famous Strobilanthus Kunthianus, popularly known as Neelakurinji is one of the rare and threatened species that grows here.

The Nilgiri Tahr is seen in the highlands and rocky regions of this national park. Sambar, barking deer, gaur, giant Malabar squirrel, tiger, panther, wild dogs, civet cat, jungle cat, Nilgiri langur, giant squirrel, grass owl, black winged kite, wood pigeon, black bird, Eurasian kestrel, jungle crow etc. are seen here.

Thattekad Bird Sanctuary

Thattekkad bird sanctuary in Devicolam Taluk of Idukki lies on the northern bank of the Periyar river. The area of the sanctuary is 25 sq.Km. The presence of more than 200 varieties of birds in this area attracted the renowned ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali and his efforts are also behind the formation of this sanctuary. This sanctuary is 80 Kms. From Cochin and 60 to 450 metres above sea level.

Important birds found here include large falcon, gray jungle fowl, white breasted water hen, hornbill, jungle bush-quail, etc. A study conducted by Bombay Natural History Society during 1985 identifies 253 species here.

The vegetation in this area consists of tropical evergreen, semi evergreen, moist deciduous forests and plantations of teak, rosewood, mahogany etc. Further, more than 28 varieties of animals and nine varieties of reptiles have accepted this area as their natural habitat.
Thekkady

With its matchless scenic beauty and the facilities offered by the Periyar lake, Thekkady attracts a large number of tourists. The sanctuary spreads over an area of 673 sq.km and is situated at a height of 900 to 1800 metres above mean sea level. Facilities are available for cruising in this lake.

Wild animals seen here include elephants, bisons, sambar, monkeys and wild bear. Fortunate visitors can have a glimpse of the tigers foraging in this area. However on sunny summer days one can see herds of wild elephants bathing in the lake. Bisons are a wary and hardy lot and usually never allow any intruder to approach them and the sound of the motor boats scare them away. But a keen animal lover can stay in one of the few observation towers for a couple of days and luck will surely come his way.

Some of the famous tea gardens are located around this place. Further Peermede, 43 k.m. below Thekkady, has a golf course and offers excellent facilities for stay.
Idukki Wild Sanctuary

Idukki wild sanctuary is quite near the District Head Quarters at Kuyilimala near Painavu. The great reservoir formed by the construction of the Idukki Arch Dam and dams at Cheruthoni and Kulamavu offers beautiful sight to the casual visitor. Further the pristine forests and green hills around the area provide ample scope for trekking. In windy and rainy days elephants can be seen even on the road from Thodupuzha to the District Head Quarters. Unless offended these pachyderms wait on the road for a few minutes and give way to the vehicles. The Arch dam at Idukki, the highest of its kind in Asia, attracts a lot of tourists. Further, the area is easily accessible by road, by being just about 100 k.m. From Ernakulam.
Thommankuthu

Thommankuthu is another centre of attraction in Idukki, and is just half an hour's drive from Thodupuzha, the nearest town where accommodation is available. Here the brook gushing out of a crevice in the rocky cliff gives the illusion to the visitor that it is not water but milk that is gushing out.
Kulamavu

Blessed with natural beauty and salubrious climate Kulamavu is a colony of the K.S.E. Board employees. Kulamavu Dam is situated here.

Moolamattom

The underground powerhouse of the Idukki Hydroelectric Project is located here. It is at the foot of the Nadukani hills
Munnar

Munnar was the summer resort of the British Government in the south. The town is situated on the confluence of three mountain streams, Muthirappuzha ( Kannimalayar), Nallathanni and Kundala. Munnar has some of the biggest tea plantations in the world. This hill station more than 5000 feet above sea level with its mist and flowers, has very good potential to be developed into a tourist spot.
Marayur

This remote village on the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats is in the outskirts of Munnar. The relics of new stone-age civilization has been unearthed here. The stone cabins, called 'Muniyaras', attract a lot of research scholars. It is the only place in Kerala having natural growth of sandal wood trees.
Peermade

Peermade, another centre of tourist attraction has a history of its own. The summer palace of the erstwhile Rajas of Travancore is an important monument here.
